#THEOSNovel

A secret lineage. A family cursed. A forbidden love that can’t be denied.

Veterinarian Reina Kirke is exhausted. So, when her best friend suggests a European vacation, she doesn’t hesitate. A much-needed break and a chance to investigate her mysterious family tree sound perfect. Too bad she’s in no way prepared for what she finds. The fairytale town in Belgium hides family secrets grounded in the supernatural. Legends of werewolves and witches surround her, and a taboo love affair threatens to pull her into a danger she might not be able to handle.

What seems like a chance encounter with Blaise Woodward, a brooding hunk with his own secrets, sets up a sequence of events that could unravel both of their families as they realize their deep connection to each other is generations old. But only one thing is certain.

Their lives will never be the same…

 Excerpt
The Neil Gaiman book, American Gods, was doing nothing to keep Blaise’s mind occupied. He pulled off his glasses and rubbed his eyes, then traced the scars along his cheek. Nightmares of the puma that had attacked him visited his dreams occasionally. He could still feel the razor-sharp claws burning tracks through his flesh. The scars were a constant, blunt reminder he was not immortal and of what he had lost.

Guilt tugged at him. He sighed. Brielle would want him to move on, but no opportunities had opened for him to take a step forward. At least, none that he cared to walk toward.

The front door opened, and a musical voice called for him.

“Kitchen.”

Emery Pierson, his cousin’s stepdaughter and his late wife’s best friend, entered with her uplifting mixture of almond, jasmine, and orange infusing the air. Her bright smile was a welcome sight. She stepped up and kissed him on each cheek. “What are you doing?” she asked. Her medium length mane of corkscrew curls bounced as she spun to the fridge and helped herself to a beer. She handed him one, and they walked to the couch.

“Well?”

“Well, what?” Blaise replied, sipping from the bottle.

She gave him an exasperated look. Squinting, she lifted the corner of her lip. “What are you doing? Brooding?”

He sniffed and looked away, picking up his book. Holt had left several hours ago, intent on following Reina to see if she contacted anyone. Although he might seem to have fallen for her charm and suspected her innocence from the nasty events that had started again, Holt wanted to be cautious. Blaise understood, although he didn’t appreciate it as, once again, Holt layered compulsion on Blaise to keep him from following and approaching Reina.

“Sulking. Poor wolfie has to stay home.” Her words held no sting, and she took a deep drink.

“I am not sulking.”

“How much have you read about Shadow’s adventures?” She nodded at his book.

He sighed. Not much this evening.

“Oui, you are sulking. I really like Shadow. He would make an excellent book boyfriend, but his incessant moping about and feeling guilty about a bitch who cheated on him is pathetic. Just like you” ––she drew a circle in the air–– “sitting around and doing nothing.”

He had told her little about Reina, but Emery had an uncanny ability of picking up on the unspoken. He said, “What can I do, Emery? He’s forcing me to stay home.”

She cocked her eyebrows and jutted out her full, pink lips. “Holt isn’t forcing me to stay home.” She leaned forward and whispered conspiratorially. “I can drive anywhere I want with any passenger I want.”

Why hadn’t he thought to ask for her help? She knew the unwritten finer details of the compulsion. His scars wrinkled with his answering smile. “You are a devil.”
