1. What would you consider to be your
Kryptonite as an author?
Social Media is a big one. You watch a
few cute puppy videos, and you get lost. I must discipline myself, especially
with deadlines, to curtail my social media time.
2. If you could tell your younger writing
self anything, what would it be?
Have more fun and relax. I think
we spend so much time worrying about the future and how we will cope, but once
we live in that future, we realize we have nothing to worry about. We survived.
3. Favorite childhood memory involving
books?
Reading The Trumpeter Swan by E.B.
White as a kid. I sat in the library, enraptured by that book.
4. Did you want to be an author when you
grew up?
I always knew I wanted to do something with words and
stories. But I never pictured writing books. It seemed too hard, and the books
were so long. I had to grow into the idea.
5. If you could own any animal as a pet,
what would it be?
As a wildlife rehabber with the Louisiana
Wildlife and Fisheries, I have had many exotic animals in my home. But I would
love to have a wallaby or lemur.
6. Have you ever met anyone famous?
Several
people. I grew up in the motion picture business, my father was a producer, so
I met a lot of big names. Henry Fonda, Roger Moore, Jane Seymour, and Charles
Bronson, to name a few. Tennessee Williams was also a family friend.
7. How long, on average,
does it take you to write a book?
I can write an 80,000-word book in about
three weeks. I get pretty into a book and push to get through it. Once I have a
rough draft, I will spend another week or two combing through it.
8. Do you have any advice
for aspiring writers?
Always keep writing and expect your style to change.
Every editor, bad review, and fan you meet will influence your writing because
we remember every criticism and praise, shaping what we write in the future.
9. What is your favorite
genre to read?
Love historical books, usually non-fiction. I am a history nut,
so anything related to the past intrigues me.
10. When
did you write your first book?
I wrote my first book over twenty-five years ago
but did not publish it until 2007.
11. What
sparks your creativity/how do you get your ideas?
Anything can spark my
creativity. Ideas for stories can come from anywhere, and I have a journal
filled with story ideas. I am blessed with a very active imagination.
12. What
do you like to do when you’re not writing?
When not writing, I am hanging
out with my creatures. As a permitted wildlife rehabber with the Louisiana
Wildlife and Fisheries, animals are my passion. I spend my non-writing hours
tending to orphaned and injured wildlife.
13. What’s
a typical writing day like for you?
I will write all morning and stop in
the afternoon for a break. That is my downtime when I exercise, and then I will
pick it up again in the evening. I usually write until about midnight. Being a
four-legged momma doesn’t allow for much sleep, though, so I am generally up at
the crack of dawn.
14. How
do you choose your book covers?
Book covers are dependent on
whether I am self-publishing or with a publisher. Publishers have a say over
book covers for the most part, but they do ask for my input. I have been
blessed to work with some wonderful publishers who prize writer input.
15. What’s
one thing you’d like to say to your readers?
Thank you for supporting me.
My readers keep me going and I am always happy to hear from them.

Alexandrea Weis, RN-CS, PhD, is a multi-award-winning author of over twenty-seven novels, a screenwriter, ICU Nurse, and historian who was born and raised in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
