My Review
The Discarded is a crazy thrill ride through the desolate, frigid wilderness of Canada. Seeing the cover should give readers an idea of what to expect within the pages of this book. Lots of cold and snow, but also one of the most insane, slightly convoluted escape plans I've ever seen play out in a book. And I mean that in the best possible way.
The story follows a simple man named Ellis. Ellis has a wife and a daughter he loves, and they're settling in after moving from Edmonton to Toronto. Ellis gets up for work one morning, but five minutes after he arrives, he's arrested for murder. SWAT takes him in, and nothing he says matters. His wife gets him a lawyer, but even the lawyer can't do anything. Ellis is sent to trial, found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison. All for a crime he claims he didn't commit.
Finding himself locked away in a facility in the middle of nowhere Canada, Ellis struggles to adjust to his new life. Things aren't easy , and they only get worse when he gets jumped in the showers. Soon, though, Ellis starts planning his escape. He knows he's innocent, and he needs to get back to his family and find out who is behind him being framed and imprisoned. But escape isn't as easy as it seems. Danger lurks all around, and the biggest foe may be closer than Ellis expects...
I really enjoyed this story. It was easy to get sucked into, and the more the story progressed, the more stressed out and anxious I felt. I had no idea what was going on or why, and trying to piece things together made me feel a bit crazy. Ellis was definitely part of one of the wildest plots ever.
I don't want to say too much more about the story, because it's well worth the read, but just know it's one of those books where you may have to suspend your disbelief a little. It feels very real, but also like a movie playing out. I found it easy to imagine the scenes in my head as I read the book.
If you're looking for a thriller that will throw you for a loop, check out The Discarded.
4.5 stars!
