Sometimes
it seems only a nurse can bring technical information down to an understanding
that an ordinary person can grasp. The Nurse Florence® book series provides
high quality medical information that even a child can grasp. By introducing
young kids to correct terminology and science concepts at an early age, we can
help increase our children’s health literacy level as well as help to prepare
them for courses and jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We
need more scientists so I hope that many children will enjoy this book series
and consider a job involving science.

My Review
Nurse Florence: I'm Having Trouble Sleeping is one of the many books in the Nurse Florence series. This story, as the title states, deals with sleep issues. As someone who suffers with sleep issues myself, I thought this book was right up my alley. Although the books are meant for kids, adults can read them too (and may need to for younger readers who struggle with big words).
This book is about Condi, a little girl who falls asleep is class. She's sent to the nurse's office, where she and Nurse Florence discuss a variety of sleep issues (apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, etc) and how to treat them. Nurse Florence also offers suggestions for ways to get better sleep, such as reading a book instead of watching videos on your phone or meditating to calm your mind.
The story does offer medical terminology throughout, and while some young readers may have a hard time with the words, I do think they'll enjoy learning something new.
It's a relatively easy to read and understand book, and I like how, even with the bigger, more scientific words, it's written in a kid-friendly way. It tackles the subject of poor sleep (for various reasons), how to get better sleep, the different stages of sleep, and includes a handy chart showing how much sleep a person needs for their age. According to the chart, someone my age needs 7-8 hours of sleep, but I'm lucky if I manage 4-5. š¤·
I do think these are nifty little books for kids to learn more about health/medical issues as well as scientific terms for different things. They're easy to read while also being educational, and I think that's great.
4.5 stars!
