A great darkness is coalescing to the south, in the lands of the Dinay, the enemy of the Shinumu. Rumors abound of sorcerous priests steeped in blood sacrifice who have come from foreign lands to rule.

Walking the Shadows – Behind the Name of a New Character

By Stephen Zimmer

An added moniker in a given character’s name always reveals important key elements about that character. This is certainly the case with Hongvi Shadow Walker, a warrior of the Shinumu Tribe who is the main protagonist of A Moment in Eternity, my latest novella to be released.

This character exists in the same world and time as Rayden Valkyrie and Ragnar Stormbringer, whose tales span no less than 12 novellas and three novels to date.  Their epithets, and how they got them, are very intrinsic to their character arcs, in much the same way as Hongvi’s is.

A Moment In Eternity does not provide the full explanation of how he came to be known among his people as “Shadow Walker,” but it does begin that process from the outset.  The opening of the novella takes the reader to where Hongvi has gone, alone, to investigate rumors of hostile giants encroaching on the vast plains to the east that have served as bountiful hunting territory for the Shinumu, and other tribes like the Ashiwi that are allied to them.

The first line of the novella is:

Not even a whisper of the chilled night air rippled through the brooding stillness.

It is, from the start, an image of shadows and silence that greets the reader, and within that kind of atmosphere and setting, they are introduced to Hongvi.  He is a warrior, but he is very distinct from other warrior-characters of mine such as Rayden and Ragnar.  Stealth, and the ability to skillfully walk in shadows, is one of his greatest strengths.

While strong of body in his own right, he is not the brawny titan that Ragnar is.  Nor is he the master of multiple melee weapons in the same way that Rayden is.  As a hunter, he is adept with a bow.  He is very capable in the use of a spear and knife, but his skills align well with his mastery of hunting, tracking, moving in silence, and concealing himself.

Hongvi is also a character with a genuine spiritual thirst, a burning drive to understand the greater mysteries of life and the deeper realities of the world.  Living in a world brimming with spirits, shamans, and supernatural entities, he is brought face to face with these numinous things often, and, in this story and those to come, these areas also become an intrinsic part of what his epithet of Shadow Walker represents.

The name has multiple layers of meaning for him.  These layers of meaning are further girded by the name given to him at birth, Hongvi, which is derived from the Hopi word for “strength.” Thus, his core strength is found through his walking of the shadows, in both a mystical and a physical sense.  That this “walking of the shadows” is recognized by others of his world, to the degree that they have bestowed the moniker of “Shadow Walker” upon him, attests to an exceptional nature that he has honed through years of discipline, training, dedication, and loyalty to those who have mentored him.

All of this fuels the creative fire within when writing this character and telling Hongvi’s tale, as it comes to me.  I, as much as the reader, want to delve into Hongvi’s world and more fully understand what it means for him to be called “Shadow Walker.”

Join me for that journey, with Hongvi, and I invite you to make that introduction through the tale told in A Moment In Eternity.
