My Review
The Hiking Trip is one of those books where you think you have things all figured out, but then something happens that throws a wrench into your well-thought-out deductions. And then, when you think nothing else could throw you off, the ending happens, and you're left with your jaw on the floor, screaming, "What?!" Just me? Okay...
The story follows Maisie, a nineteen year old who goes off on a trip to Canada (in the late 1990s) with her friend Ruth. Except... Ruth cancels last minute. Maisie is at the airport wondering what she should do. Does she get on the next plane back home and miss out, or does she still take the trip, albeit by herself? Ultimately, she decides to go it alone (obviously, or we wouldn't have a story), and when she meets up with a brother/sister duo who are also hiking the trail, Maisie thinks it won't be so bad after all. Boy, is she wrong... Twenty-five years later, a body is found on the near the trail. A woman named Laura realizes this discovery could be the start of her well-crafted life unraveling right before her very eyes. What secret is Laura keeping, and how far will she go to protect it?
I really enjoyed this book. It's a tense little thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. You'll be wondering what, exactly, happened on the trail that fateful day twenty-five years ago, and you'll be wondering how Laura ties in to everything. Especially when things start to ramp up, and Laura becomes even more desperate to not only protect her secret but also uncover the truth before it's too late. There's a lot going on within these pages. I thought it was a great little mystery/thriller, and I did not expect that ending, that's for sure. If you're looking for an intriguing new book to read, check out The Hiking Trip. 4.5 stars!
