Opinions are 100% my own.
The Confession is a surprisingly good musical. I knew nothing about it (other than the synopsis) before watching it, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. There's drama, humor, and lots of emotional moments. I'll admit, I did shed some tears during one scene.
The musical is a beautifully put together show that will keep you entertained. The songs are lovely, and some are even a little bit silly. And each character is easy to like (or dislike, in one character's case). There's even a small redemption for one character who seems awful at first.
The story follows Katie Lapp, a young Amish girl who, after her fiancé dies in a boating accident, discovers she's adopted. Determined to find her birth mother, she leaves her community, risking a shunning, and goes on a journey to discover the truth about who she is.
But Laura, Katie's birth mother, has troubles of her own. She's dying, and when her husband discovers she's leaving everything to her long-lost daughter, he concocts a plan to try and steal her fortune away for himself.
Can Katie and Laura reunite before it's too late?
The story is engaging, and each actor on stage gives it their all, making you feel as though you're actually watching someone's real-life drama unfold before your very eyes. Katie is a sweet character who exudes hope and optimism. Laura comes across as a bit naïve and confused, but that could be because of her illness. She has her maid, though, to help guide her along. And Dylan... he's a sleazeball. A slimy, gold-digging monster. John Schneider plays him perfectly.
I think, though, my favorite character, was Allyson. She seems to live up to the "dumb blonde" stereotype at first, and she honestly seems like she's a bit sleazy too, but she does redeem herself. She's amusing, though, even though I hated her for a while.
With beautifully sung songs, a story filled with secrets and drama, and some talented actors who really bring things to life, The Confession is a delightful musical sure to entertain fans of all ages.
