Cordelia, Wade, and friends return to the mainland to find a nuclear junkyard. With the human population drastically reduced, most blame the mermaids and selachii for deserting them and hiding the sanctuary of Atlantis.

When a new prophecy says they must unite with a third, a human, Wade and Cordelia open their land to the survivors. But sharing Atlantis comes with a price. Prejudices are rife and many are out for revenge. And the third in their trio is anything but cooperative.

Distracted by the politics on the island, Cordelia misses the creeping return of Wade’s old flame, Stephanie. Seeking vengeance, Stephanie transforms into a sea witch and evokes the hound of the ocean, a terrible beast from the ancient depths that kills without prejudice.

With Atlantis threatened, Cordelia’s powers misfiring, and a betrayer among their ranks, mermaids and selachii are once again at risk of extinction. Only if they can remain united with the humans and vanquish the hound and Stephanie will they have a chance to reclaim their island.

Perfect for fans of the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi, Twilight by Stephanie Meyer, The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, Shadow & Bone by Leigh Bardugo, Crush by Tracy Wolff, Mermaid’s Return by A.L. Knorr.

The screen came to life. The channel numbers were big and bold in the top corner, but the rest remained disappointingly blank. Trent pressed a few more buttons. The TV winked off and on again. Still nothing.

“You wired it up, right?” Wade asked.

“Yeah.” Trent waved a wrist in his direction. “Took me the best part of a week.”

“And you used the Power of the Sea appropriately?” I asked.

He threw me a sarcastic look. “Instructions were simple. It should be working.”

He flipped through the channels. The numbers in the corner climbed, but still the screen remained an ominous black.

“Wait, go back,” Wade said.

Trent returned to channel 40. The screen filled with fire. Licking flames towered high into the sky.

“Forest fire?” Maya suggested.

We stood there mute, knowing in the depths of our bellies that there was a malevolent quality about this fire. This was no summer blaze.

“Turn it up,” Wade said.

Trent thumbed the volume button and a news reporter’s voice filled the air. The voice was female and panicked. Her words rambled across the waves to us in a flurry of emotion.

“Look at the date.” Maya pointed to the bottom of the screen. “April 7th, that was over three months ago.”

The picture changed to show a city. I recognized Washington DC. A skyscraper was centered in the middle of the screen, the sky a smoky gray. The next second the building disappeared in a burst of fire and ash. Nothing remained. A circle of destruction turned to ash and rubble. A mushroom cloud filled the sky. A nuclear bomb.
