Jesus Revolution is a fascinating film. It's based on an actual event that happened in the late 60s/early 70s, and even if you aren't a religious person, watching this movie will you make you realize we need more of this in our lives, especially now. I'm not even entirely sure what this is, but peace, love, acceptance, finding "family", and belonging all sound very appealing. And that's what's at the heart of this movie.
Starting in 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War, the film tells the story of Greg Laurie, a teenager with a single mom, who is attending a military academy to "expand his opportunities", according to this mom. But that's all about to change when Greg makes some new friends with some new ideas. The film also tells the story of Chuck Smith, a pastor with a floundering church. When Chuck's daughter picks up an intriguing hitchhiker and brings him home, Chuck's life is changed forever.
This movie is very bold, but also very comforting. It doesn't come across as preachy like some faith-based films can, nor is it portrayed as a cult, which some people in Hollywood tend to think religion is. I think this is a movie that will make you smile. It may make you cry. And, if you're like me, one scene may even give you chills (in a good way).
The cast is absolutely phenomenal, especially the actor who plays Lonnie. He portrays Lonnie as this charming street preacher who just wants to find a home for his wayward flock (mostly homeless people recovering from drugs), and he and his people are given a new chance at life when Pastor Chuck accepts them into his church. But Lonnie gets a bit carried away and lets his new-found "power" go to his head.
Kelsey Grammer is also fantastic as Pastor Chuck. He's open to discussion. He's willing to change things up. And he seems to find pure happiness and joy with his new congregation.
I also found it inspiring that not only are Greg and his wife still going strong not only with their marriage, but with their church, too, and they still do baptisms there in Pirate's Cove. That's honestly pretty cool.
Jesus Revolution is a fun, heartwarming, inspiring film that should appeal to anyone, regardless of whether you consider yourself religious, spiritual, or none of the above. With a great cast, a fascinating story, and both drama and romance, this is one movie you won't want to miss. Check it out!
