A lifetime game of solitaire turns into a vicious family feud.
New York City 1923
Back in the city after a nightmare vacation, PI Jax Diamond and his courageous canine partner, Ace, just can’t catch a break when three quick and easy cases explode into a massive mess of unrelated major crimes with victims, dead and alive, piling up.
Laura Graystone’s career soars as she rehearses for her new Broadway musical. Yet, she senses something’s amiss when Jax spends more time with a new buddy aboard a steamboat than solving crimes. With the help of their friends and a mysterious stranger, Laura and Ace set out to get to the bottom of it.
It’s a whirlwind of twists and turns as Jax discovers there is far more to a family than just blood relatives. And who knows? They may just solve the biggest case of his life.

Laura watched the woman until she disappeared out the front door, trying to make sense of her last comment. Then, she shrugged her shoulders, knowing everyone had their own peculiarities.
Fran came over to her table and set the bag of sandwiches down. “Here’s the rest of your order, honey. Give Ace and Jax a kiss for me.”
“I will, thank you, Fran. Could I have my check, please?”
Fran winked at her. “The pretty woman in the red dress already paid it.”
“Oh, wasn’t that sweet?” Laura left Fran a tip and carried the bag of food with her.
A group of new customers walked towards her, so she moved over and let them pass. Finally, Laura continued heading for the door, but a man sitting at the counter leaned over into the aisle in front of her.
“Hello again.”
Laura recognized him from the subway earlier. “Oh, hello.”
“I can’t thank you enough for helping me out today. After shopping for all those toys, I certainly had my hands full.”
Laura laughed. “It was my pleasure. I could tell you were struggling trying to carry all those…gifts…” She lost her smile and her breath.
“Can I buy you a cup of coffee or a soda to show my gratitude?” he asked.
“That’s very nice of you, but I’m in a hurry.”
“Perhaps another time.”
Her heart raced as she quickly nodded. “Have a good evening.”
Laura rushed out of the restaurant, and Ace was waiting for her. She bent down and hugged him. “I’m so glad you’re here with me, Ace. What that nice woman said wasn’t so strange after all, was it?”
